"Hopefully I'll be back here next year," Julia · Gerges promised after winning the 2017 Hengqin Life Zhuhai WTA Super Classic: "Looking forward to seeing you all again." A year later, she has not broken her promise. On October 16, Beijing time, the Zhuhai WTA Super Elite Organizing Committee officially announced that Gerges, who is currently ranked 9th in the world, has become the first player to enter the 2018 Hengqin Life Zhuhai WTA Super Elite Tournament.
Broke out at the end of the 2017 season
Returning to Zhuhai as the defending champion, the scene of Gerges winning the cup seems to be still vivid. In the 2017 season, Gerges successfully won the cup on his first visit to Zhuhai, defeating Mladenovich, Sevastova and Van der Weg in succession on the way to the championship, and won 4 consecutive games without dropping a set in the hard-fought "firefight", and Gerges harvested unexpected surprises in Zhuhai. "I don't think there's a better way to end the season (laughs)." Winning the biggest title of her career, Gerges scored 700 championship points and saw her soar from 53rd to 14th in the world rankings at the start of the year.
The 2018 season ushered in a breakthrough
Winning her first title in Auckland at the start of the season with five straight wins, Gerges took her cross-season winning streak to 14 and continued her heroic form to surpass the 400 career win total. After reaching the semi-finals in St. Petersburg, Gerges reached the top 10 for the first time, becoming the eighth German woman to break into the top 10 after Petkovic and Kerber. The 29-year-old has a dream come true, and Gerges is proud of her and her team. Despite missing out on the Australian Open and French Open, Gerges became more focused in her preparation for Wimbledon, and after the first two rounds, she equalled her best Wimbledon record. With a 7-6, 3-6, 10-8 win over Strycova, a 6-3, 6-2 win over Vekic and a 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 win over Bertens, Gerges finally brought his tour winning streak to the Grand Slam. After reaching the semi-finals of five consecutive matches at the All England Club, she won the semi-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career. Another "first" in my career came at the age of 29.
As the 2018 season draws to a close, Gerges has won 40 matches, and with 2,775 championship points, she successfully qualified for the 2018 Hengqin Life Zhuhai WTA Super Classic, becoming the first defending champion in the history of the Zhuhai WTA Super Classic to compete again the following year. Returning to Zhuhai as the defending champion, Gerges said:
I'm very excited to be back in Zhuhai as the defending champion, and winning the title here last year is one of the best memories of my life. I can't wait to come back to the WTA Super Classic in Zhuhai because I've had a lot of support here, especially the fans who are watching the tournament on TV, and I look forward to seeing you all again."
The 2018 Hengqin Life Zhuhai WTA Super Classic will be held from October 30th to November 4th. To celebrate the fourth anniversary of the tournament, the tournament will continue to invite tennis legend Graf to help and interact with the fans. In addition, in order to allow more fans to enjoy the top tennis tournaments and experience a healthy and fashionable life, the organizing committee has continuously launched "ticket discounts" since July, such as "early bird tickets", "Teacher's Day discounts", "National Day discounts", "box discounts" and so on. Looking forward to going to the tennis appointment with you in the beautiful scenery of Hengqin, Zhuhai!
